No contract usually means no fixed term. It does not mean no paperwork. The split, the scope of the work, the notice period, who owns what and when you get paid all still have to be agreed, and agreed somewhere you can read later. A deal that lives in a sales call and a few DMs cannot be checked by anyone afterwards, and if the call says no contract but the written terms carry a commitment, the written terms govern.
Ask for these before anyone touches your account.
- The split as one number, and whether it is taken on gross or on net after the platform fee.
- What the split covers, what costs extra and what is excluded.
- The notice period, how notice is given and what happens to work in progress.
- Ownership of your content, your captions and anything made during the trial.
- Payment timing, and whether the agency invoices you or deducts its share.
- How access works, and that it is removed the day notice is given.
A trial is a short test with a shape. Start with a fixed end date, so it cannot drift into a standing arrangement. Keep the scope narrow, so you know what is being tested: chat, posting, promo, or all three. Record a baseline before day one: earnings by source, subscriber count, renew rate and follower counts on every platform the agency will touch. Agree the review in advance, process first (did reports arrive on time, were approvals respected, did access creep) and the numbers second. One agency advice page calls 30 days the practical minimum. Treat that as its view, not a rule.
A month shows you how an agency works. It does not show you a year of income. Fan subscriptions renew on their own unless the fan cancels, so a short trial says little about retention, and pending balances mean the final days may not be visible when you sit down to review. Judge the trial on process and on movement against your baseline. Do not read it as a forecast.
Nobody can promise what strangers will spend. Agencies advertise first-week and first-month targets, and the careful ones label them as targets. A pitch that guarantees a figure is either guessing or counting on you not holding them to it. Ask how the number was reached and what happened to the creators who missed it. A fair agency talks about the inputs it controls: reply times, posting cadence, promo volume, reporting. Your earnings are the output.
Month to month can hide a renewal clause. Some agreements roll into a new fixed term unless you send written notice inside a window, and notice windows commonly run 30 to 90 days before the renewal date. Miss it and you can be committed for the whole new term. Read for the words renew, extend, convert and roll over, and ask what happens if nobody acts on the last day.
- Calendar the trial end date the day you sign.
- Add the notice deadline as a second event, with a reminder two weeks before.
- Send notice in the exact form the terms require, and keep proof it went out.
- Ask for the full long-term agreement now, so a new document cannot appear at the end.
Consumer protection offices give the same advice for any trial: keep track of the end date and cancel before it passes.
If the trial ends and you leave, you should leave whole. Written confirmation that it is over. Every team seat, CRM connection and sign-in method removed, plus a password change on your side. Your files, fan notes, scripts and templates. A trial-period statement you can check against your own earnings page before you pay. If you stay, you sign the agreement you read at the start, not a longer one that turned up on the last day.
This is general information, not legal advice. Contract and renewal rules differ by country and state.
QUESTIONS
Yes. No contract usually means no fixed term. The split, scope, notice period, ownership and payment timing still need to be in writing.
Long enough to see process and movement against your baseline, with a fixed end date. Agencies often describe a month as the minimum, and no trial can show a full year of earnings.
A clause that rolls the deal into a new fixed term unless you give notice inside a window. Calendar the end date and the notice deadline the day you sign.
